This will slow down your heart rate while you release chemicals in the brain that you are calm.

It is interesting that this method is great for many other things, except for falling asleep. When you are stressed, the endocrine system releases adrenaline through your adrenal glands. That will elevate your heart rate and can make you feel jittery and unwell. That furthermore will make you to breathe rapid and shallow. But, by using of this breathing method you can counteract the natural effects of adrenaline and your body will be forced to slow down the heart rate.
